With the score tied at 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning, an RBI single by first baseman Juan Tejeda plated Quinn Stewart from second base with the go-ahead run as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Sussex Skyhawks 4-3 on Wednesday night at Skylands Park.
The New Jersey Jackals are proud to announce that infielder Myron Leslie and left-hander A.J. Wideman have been selected as the Can-Am League Batter and Pitcher of the Month for June.
In 27 games, Leslie batted .367 with six home runs, 30 RBI, 19 runs scored and three stolen bases.
Wideman made five starts in June going a perfect 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA.
The New Jersey Jackals have announced the signing of former player Ramon Nivar by the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Nivar reported to the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Double-A Southern League on June 25.
Nivar began the 2008 season with the Jackals, spending time at shortstop and in the outfield. While playing for New Jersey, he batted .221 with three home runs and 21 RBI over 23 games.
The New Jersey Jackals proudly announce that Patricia Beesley has been selected as our first-ever Mortgage Monday winner. She will receive two months of mortgage or rent payments from the Jackals.
“I am still in shock!” exclaimed Beesley following the check presentation ceremony on the field that took place after the conclusion of the 8-2 Jackals victory in Monday's home opener at Yogi Berra Stadium. “I looked at my daughter and asked her if they just called my name!”
On June 1, Jackals right-hander Stuart Pomeranz fired a first-pitch strike to Quebec leadoff hitter Goefrey Tomlinson. Aside from the importance of getting ahead in the count, this may not have seemed like anything more than one of some 80 or 90 pitches that were to be thrown that day by the starter. That is, until you consider that it was the first pitch Pomeranz had thrown in a game in nearly two years.
The New Jersey Jackals have announced that former pitcher Craig Breslow has been claimed off waivers by the Oakland A’s.
Breslow, 28, was 1-2 with a 6.28 ERA for the Minnesota Twins this season, holding left-handers to a .211 batting average and right-handers to a .226 mark. Although they placed him on waivers to clear a spot on the 25-man roster, the Twins were hoping to keep Breslow in the organization and likely assign him to Triple-A Rochester.
"We lost a bullpen guy without trying to lose a bullpen guy," said Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire. "I kind of got shocked when they told me."
