JACKALS STOCK UP ON SERIOUS TALENTS

Little Falls, NJ – The New Jersey Jackals have announced the signing of several players for the 2009 season, including infielder Myron Leslie, outfielders Ryan Rogowski and Quinn Stewart, and pitchers Stuart Pomeranz and David Qualben.

Leslie, a 2004 eighth round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics, enters his sixth professional season after spending the last two years at the Double-A level with the Midland RockHounds. In 108 games last season, Leslie batted .248 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI. The Florida native showed his defensive versatility with 60 games at third base, 28 in the outfield, eight at first base, and seven at second base in 2008. In 2006, the University of South Florida product finished second in the Single-A California League with 100 RBI. Leslie, who turns 27 on May 2, is a career .268 hitter.

Rogowski, 27, split the 2008 season between the Single-A Inland Empire 66ers and the Double-A Jacksonville Suns in the Los Angeles Dodgers system. Rogowski, a native of Livonia, Michigan, stole 37 bases last year to bring his career total to 106. The University of Illinois alumnus sports a career .266 batting average with 20 triples and 11 home runs in three professional seasons.

Stewart, a former Tampa Bay Rays farmhand, batted .283 with eight home runs and 44 RBI for the Single-A Columbus Catfish in 2008. The 25-year-old resident of Mesquite, Texas was a First-Team All-SEC selection as a senior at Louisiana State University in 2006 after finishing second in the nation with 23 home runs. 2009 will mark Stewart’s fourth professional season.

Pomeranz, who was drafted out of high school in the second round of the 2003 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, missed the entire 2007 season after undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery in July 2007. The 6’7” right-hander led the St. Louis organization with 12 wins in 2004 and was ranked by Baseball America as the Cardinals fifth-best prospect in 2005. In his career, the Germantown, Tennessee resident has compiled a 28-22 record with a 4.41 ERA in 71 appearances (70 starts).

Qualben begins his fourth professional season in 2009 after spending the previous three years in the Houston Astros organization. Last season, the former Pace University hurler and Brooklyn, New York native posted a 3-11 record with a 5.46 ERA in 35 games -- eight starts -- for the Advanced-A Salem Avalanche. He also spent time at the Single-A level, collecting a 1.74 ERA in three appearances with the Lexington Legends. The 23-year-old southpaw has a 19-24 career record with a 3.89 ERA.
