In April of 2008, Madera was sold to the Red Sox organization and was assigned to their Double-A affiliate Portland Sea Dogs. In nine games with Portland, Madera's .421 batting average scorched the Eastern League pitching with three doubles, three home runs, and five RBIs.
Madera was reassigned to the Pawtucket Red Sox on April 26th. In his debut with the “PawSox”, Madera was impressive going 3 for 4 with a single and two doubles.
“We are very excited for Sandy.” Field manager Joe Calfapietra commented. “With hard work and dedication, Madera has gotten within a step away of achieving his dream of playing in Major League baseball.”

THE LEGEND RETIRES
The New Jersey Jackals have announced that star pitcher Joel Bennett has retired from the sport of baseball.
Bennett, a perennial fan favorite, started his 17-year career as a member of the Boston Red Sox organization after being drafted in the 21st round of the 1991 draft. After several years in the minors, Bennett made his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1998, playing in only two games and working just two innings of work. In 1999, Bennett had his first major league start of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, earning the win against the Colordao Rockies. Bennett continued his success to a 2-1 record over five games. In 2001, Bennett's journey led him to his final team, the New Jersey Jackals.
In seven seasons with the Jackals, Bennett finished with a 59-19 record with 632 strikeouts in 660 innings pitched. Bennett holds almost every Jackals' pitching record including most wins in a season (14), career wins (59), and strikeouts (632). On June 23rd, 2002, Bennett set the Jackals single game strikeout record with an outstanding 16 strikeouts.
“A person like Joel comes around once or twice in a lifetime. His skill and ability on the field is matched by his care and devotion to his family, team and community.” Field Manager Joe Calfapietra commented.
With Bennett's retirement, he has also stepped down as the Jackals pitching coach.
To honor Joel Bennett and his accomplishments with the New Jersey Jackals, the Jackals have announced that Friday, August 22 will be Joel Bennett retirement night. On this night, the number 28 will be retired in his honor.
The Jackals wish Bennett the best of luck as he moves past his career in baseball and remind him that he will always have a home in New Jersey.
